The Villages
The Villages are located in Sumter County, Florida. The area is a residential development that began in the early 60’s. The residential homes have a few guidelines one being that at least one resident must be 55 years of age or older. The aim was to create a strictly adult area, geared to retirees. The population in early 2000 was just over 8000 people. This number increases in the winter months when tourists move into the area on time share etc.
The Villages is located in sunny central Florida mid-way between the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. An hour north of Orlando, it is close to Florida’s famous tourist attractions and Orlando’s International Airport. The size of the community is roughly 5 ½ miles square. The area is known as a ‘golf cart’ community because of its size and development. Locals call the area Golf Cart heaven, it is said that there are over 30,000 golf carts within the community. There are numerous ‘cart’ trails throughout the area. There are over 40 recreation areas in The Villages. They area has roughly 20 executive golf courses, and 8 championship clubs. There are three fitness centres, a woodworking shop and various flower, vegetable and botanical gardens.
The Villages is a truly remarkable area. It has its own entity, there are shops, malls, recreation centres. There are organized daily/weekly/monthly activities and entertainment.
